The effects of Health in Golf

There are many connections with health and the game of Golf. Walking on the Golf Course or even standing to make a play allows the body and the mind to be able to be relaxed during a game of golf. Although there may be
some cons when playing golf such as injuries and stress, these factors can also allow the golfer to develop into a more athletic person able to endure these injuries physically and mentally either with or without a group of golfers on a golf course.

Walking on the Golf Course:

Walking on the golf course has many health benefits for a golfer. According to the World Golf Foundation, an average golfer walks about five miles on a typical golf course which can result in “burning up to 2,000 calories” during a 18 hole course.  A typical golf game lasts about two to three hours depending on the pace of play. Allowing the body to be near nature such as trees or ponds of water helps the body to take in the nature in the environment. [1] [5]

Players are able to see, smell, and hear nature within the golf course during a match of golf allowing the body to relax by disconnecting from everyday life occurring outside of the golf course. Experienced golfers developed the ability to relax their body quickly before the match, allowing them to gain tempo and rhythmic patterns needed for the golf swing for best distance results.

In order to make a play in a golf course, players must swing their golf clubs at the ball to make contact and allowing the energy to be transferred from the club to the ball in smooth transition. When swinging at the ball, players use tempo to allow minimal loss of kinetic energy from the body to golf club and to the golf ball. By having this rhythmic pattern, the body remains in constant flow of motion allowing them to minimize joint damages over the course of their life time. [4]

During a free time with a group of golfers, interaction with one another is a common way that is beneficial for a golfer’s health. In all ages from young to old, golf is a sport that allows anyone whether it is age, gender or physical build to allow them to uniquely interact when playing the game of golf. Interaction while following the rules of golf with other golfers in the group can uplift the each golfer’s mood independently reducing the chance of gaining depression that occurs outside of the golfing community.

Stress and Mood associated in Golf:

Not all stress in life is bad for an individual. Some stress can help a person grow both mentally and physically as the human body has a natural tendency to adapt to situations in life helping the person to grow stronger. Commonly, each golf courses have unique ways to challenge the golfer in a positive way. Designers of the golf course strategically place sand bunkers, ponds, and position trees for the ball to land into depending on their choosing of difficulty for the course. This results in making the golfer plan their shots to shift the ball in his desired path way. Harder courses allow the golfer to challenge themselves and gain the desire to overcome difficulties both on the golf course and life outside the golfing community. As the golfer consistently play the same golf course over a course of weeks, the player will develop a sense of direction on where to launch the ball in order to become better on that specific golf course.[2]

Common injuries that occur during a game of Golf:

Injuries in golf usually occur when the golfer takes a swing at the golf ball. The twisting motion of an inflexible body can inflict harm to an individual if the player is out of tempo.

A one year study on the injuries of golf to a group of both female and male Australian Amateur Golfers shows injuries occur more frequently to individuals who didn’t perform stretching exercise then those who did perform stretching exercise before a match of golf. There are also other stretches that a golfer take that may worsen an injury if the stretch is improper to do. [3]

Some of the most common areas that golf may develop injuries is wrist, spine, hips and shoulder when performing a golf swing since these are the areas where tempo motion can be physically stop increasing the risk of joint injuries. A golf swing consist of moving the golf club backward which involves the shoulder, spine and hips to be used in order for the golf swing to gain energy needed for the golfer to exert on the golf ball. During the downswing of the golf swing, the player must stay in tempo in order to transfer the energy gain from the hips to the spine to the shoulder and to the golf club to allow constant flow of maximum energy from the rotation of the body to the golf ball at the point of contact.

Mind and Body in the game of Golf:

When playing a game of golf, players are face with the mental picture of their desired golf swing before actually creating the swing physically that mimics the mental image of their desired swing. After conducting the physical swing of the ideal golf swing, golfers obtain valuable feedback observing how the ball reacted to the swing of the golfer. Experienced golfers learn the value of the ideal golf swing in their mind and thus allowing them to mentally picture many different scenarios that may occur when they physically hit the ball with their golf clubs. Taking the extra time to gain data on the factors that can move the ball when hitting the golf ball a certain way is needed to be able to create an ideal golf swing in the mind. With minor adjustment to the physical body with the shoulder, hips, spine, and feet can impact the trajectory of the golf ball entirely. Golf is a sport where mentality and physical connection needs to be in sync and in rhythm in order for the physical body to follow the ideal golf swing that is portrayed in the mindset of the golfer. [6]  The more the physical body is align to the ideal golf swing, the perfect the shot is in order to reduce the number of strokes in the game that would in total improve your game in the game of golf.
