Step Two (Writing):

During this week, I learn the different between primary research and secondary research on a project. A primary research is the conducted research being made by the writer themselves experiencing everything first hand. A secondary research is a documented research that has been previous pasted down by another researcher. I learn that it is better to plan your project on a timeline to have the project efficiently planned and well thought out over a course of length up until the deadline instead of cramming everything in one seating. I learn that there are techniques that are commonly used when making a primary research which is by observing an uncontrolled situation, survey to the people who are in an environment related to your project, and interviewing highly credible fellows which can allow the audience to give credit to your primary research. Throughout the days on the Wikipedia and the podcast projects that goes into the e-portfolio, I plan on using these techniques to further my writing when conducting research for future assignments.

Mental health benefits of outdoor adventures: Results from two pilot studies.

The main idea of the academic article is to do a controlled experiment on a teenager and a young adult spending eight days in the wilderness with no connection to civilization and the media. The article explains the benefit of camping and living in the wilderness woods of the Alps in the German, Austrian, and Italian Alps during this experiment. The article also address the result of the participants after the experiment in which improvements their life satisfaction and mindfulness needed for a daily task. With this main idea, it helps supports the argument of the mental benefits of getting away from civilization into a wilderness by developing a relief from deadlines of assignments.

Health Benefits of Hiking

The main idea of the article explains the benefits of hiking that would affect hiker’s health in a positive way. Addressing that hiking is not only enjoying nature for enjoyment, but can also allow the hiker to exercises which reduces heart disease, diabetes, arthritis and obesity. Walking and observing in an uncontrolled environment helps relax the body lowering the chance of hypertension, anxiety that occurs from day to day tasks of a civilized individual. With this main idea of the benefits of hiking that effects health helps address the need for an individual to take a hike exploring new places which can happen anywhere an individual wishes to hike giving them positive health benefits.

Step Nine through Thirteen (Outline):

To be able to observe and record my thoughts during a primary research in an uncontrolled experimental environment.

Observations:

·         Water rushing in the creek below

·         Large Hills

·         Wooden Cabin

·         Water droplets falling from the tree branches

·         Clear walk paths

Thoughts:

·         The sound of water running through the creek calms me down giving me a sense of peace and comfort.

·         No Wi-Fi or any sort of internet connections which lowers my anxiety to check my emails for upcoming assignments

·         The fog above and dripping droplets from tree branches allows my physical body to know that it is morning

Step Fourteen (Reflection):

I learn to experience a primary research for the first time using my senses such as smell, touch and seeing the environment for the first time. To be able to separate observation and independent thoughts into columns for me to be able to make a thesis in order to create an outline. To be able to make a connection with my secondary research which allow me to understand them through experience when conducting my primary research. Using my gained knowledge to develop an outline that is organized and structured chronologically for my audience to listen and understand. I learn to take pictures and videos the environment to allow evidence for the audience to hook onto. I wished I have known to take as many picture and videos as I can to allow me room to choose the best picture to further elevate my first person experience to my audience in my podcast.

  1. I like your records of observation that you include things you saw, you smelled, and you felt. I learned that you are fond of outdoor activities, which is beneficial to mental and physical health. Maybe you can observe on animals outdoors too, like squirrels, birds, or even insects to make your podcast more appealing and specific.

    b) I learned that hiking and camping in the great outdoors benefits health both physically and mentally.

    c) I wonder if there were other observations that you had at the campsite (like what you felt as you walked around, how the trees felt or the water if you put your hand in the creek, what kind of food you ate and how it felt out there as opposed to in the city, etc.).
